Declassified U.S. intelligence files released by the Obama administration in 2016 expose the global reach of Operation Condor during Argentina’s dictatorship. The documents show that Condor planned assassination missions in Europe, with targets that included not only exiled leftists but also members of Amnesty International and other human rights groups. CIA reports describe training courses in Buenos Aires for overseas hit teams and proposals to send agents—disguised as businessmen—to London and Paris. The files also detail efforts to gather intelligence on churches and solidarity groups to brand them as “Marxist.”
