In 1979, a coordinated attack hit the home of Walter Klein, a key adviser to Economy Minister Martínez de Hoz. Gunmen dressed as police or soldiers broke in, killed two bodyguards, and bombed the house while Klein and his family were inside. It wasn’t clear who was responsible, some reports pointed to the Montoneros, while others suggested dissident military units staging attacks to destabilize Videla’s government.

The incident exposed the deep fractures inside the dictatorship, especially over Martínez de Hoz’s unpopular economic policies and Videla’s conflicts with hard-line generals. It also came amid rising tensions around human rights, political violence, and an economy suffering from high inflation and public frustration.
