This article looks at the disturbing link between Che Guevara’s capture in Bolivia and Klaus Barbie—the Nazi war criminal known as the “Butcher of Lyon.” A new documentary, My Enemy’s Enemy, suggests that Barbie, who was protected and used by U.S. intelligence after WWII, may have advised the CIA-backed Bolivian forces hunting Che in 1967. Living in Bolivia under the alias Klaus Altmann, Barbie was admired by the Bolivian military for his counter-guerrilla experience from the war, and interviewees say he shared tactics with U.S. officers working on the Che operation.
